Natural Resources Environmental Technology

Natural Resources Environmental Technology

In both years of study (two year diploma program), you'll gain theoretical and practical knowledge – have a wealth of fieldwork (not on campus) and participate in take in two work placements with local employers and community partners.

At NSCC, small class size creates a more practical learning environment and also ensures that while the needs of employers are met, the ‘pool of graduates’ should not flood the market. As an added benefit, with at most 20 students in your program, you’ll have solid faculty: student ratios – meaning if you need help, you have far better access to it. As the courses unfold by semester (of which there are four) there will be a blend of individual work and group projects, and some of this work may be led by the two primary faculty members – or – be "independent study" with their support.

We also regularly consult local employers and interest groups in the refinement of our curriculum. Our program is recognized by DFO, Parks Canada, and many other sectors of the industry. Graduates can work as fisheries observers and are recognized for placement in DFO own fisheries school. In addition graduates can qualify for Parks Canada, Bluenose Costal Action Center, Clean Annapolis River Association etc in research assistant positions.

The NRET program is recognized nationally. NRET is accredited through ECO-Canada, and is the first college in Atlantic Canada to achieve the recognition. This means that NRET graduates become Certified Environmental Practitioners in Training on completion of their studies. This program is not recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources as a Forest Technician.

In addition articulation agreements between NSCC & Cape Breton University and Acadia University now provides NRET graduates a pathway for further learning. Our students will have advanced standing in CBU’s Bachelor of Engineering Technology program and in two degree programs at Acadia University. NRET graduates would require only 36 credits of course work (twelve 3-credit courses) over a one year time frame with CBU to acquire this degree credential. Further, some of these courses are all available on-line via distance education.

Interested? This course is very flexible!
